June 2010 Newsletter

From the Committe meeting in June:

Nine Elms C.C.

The committee has suspended Nine Elms CC for this season because of the failure to have home venues of a satisfactory standard available for league matches. Division 6 will therefore have only 9 teams.

Pitch and Facilities marks

In due course we will, as usual, show all the marks awarded to date. The committee has already had a close look at the markings awarded during May. We will be writing to two or three clubs where a consistent pattern of low scores is showing. The following clubs must be congratulated for getting at least two or more top marks already:

Late or missing results and reports

We have had a few appeals against fines on the grounds such as “I tried but my internet connection was playing up”, or “I thought I had entered it using my phone but it seems not to have got in”. Clearly if a number of people have the same problems on the same day then that does indicate a real problem and we can make allowances. However, for isolated instances, we have rejected the appeal. If you find you have a problem, the course of action we advise is that in the first instance you call someone else associated with your club to see if they can get the result in. Failing that, call Karen, Andy R or another committee member saying that you have tried but cannot meet the deadline. If we get such a call before the deadline we will not fine you.

If you are using a Blackberry or iPhone etc. to enter a result or report, because those are slightly more prone to dropout and input error, we suggest you check that the action was completed by looking at the results list or looking for the confirming e-mail.

Umpire Training

To give you lots of time to think about it, please be aware that we will be requiring clubs to send people, one per league team, to short umpiring courses in the coming close season. This will be either to attain Level 1 qualification or to attend a very brief Introductory course. This is a continued part of our drive to increase umpiring skills and knowledge of the Laws, and in due course encourage retiring players to enlarge the available pool of appointed umpires.

The courses will be part of a co-ordinated County Board initiative involving all the leagues and the plan is to have details of the courses available before the season finishes so that clubs have the opportunity to corral their “volunteers” while their players still meet regularly.
